STRONGER MEMORY: EXPERIENCES OF OLDER ADULTS AND CAREGIVERS IN AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE

Abstract Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), defined as self-reported memory issues that have worsened over the past year, can be one of first indications Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. SCD affects nearly 9% Virginians aged 45 or older, 31% these individuals live alone. A practice-based intervention is essential to addressing challenges associated with impairment. This study examined effect StrongerMemory program, which involves a series exercises. The program provides 12-week curriculum designed stimulate brain’s prefrontal cortex, governs ability retrieve memories. Participants are encouraged spend 20 30 minutes day reading aloud, writing journaling completing simple math problems. Mason Gerontology Research Team investigated pre- post-cognitive outcomes among 43 participants who participated in determine effectiveness program. were evaluated using Mini Montreal Cognitive Assessment 2.1 (Mini MoCA). mean (SD) scores MoCA 12.60 ± (pre-test) 13.53 1.9 (post-test). difference was statistically significant.
